Using dental software to receive Medicaid incentives

August 30th, 2013

What does smart dental software have to do with Medicaid incentives? Not only can dental enterprises benefit from customizable workflows by implementing new technologies in the workplace, dental management software also has the ability to put these institutions a step ahead of the competition when it comes to using electronic health records.

The U.S. medical industry has experienced rapid changes in recent years. For example, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 created a variety of programs to help stimulate the economy after a deep recession only one year earlier. Among the many initiatives outlined in the law was the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act, which established an incentive system to encourage medical clinics to start using electronic health records in the workplace. Specifically, the Medicaid EHR Incentive Program grants up to $63,750 for medical professionals who either switch to EHR services or update their existing infrastructure. According to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, this incentive program is currently offered voluntarily in 43 states across the U.S.

Expansions in Medicaid present unique opportunities
More recently, dental clinics are finding even more reasons to update internal infrastructure. One of the goals of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, which was signed into law in 2010, is to expand the current Medicaid program to Americans 65 years of age with an income level 133 percent below the federally recognized poverty level. In fact, a report from the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation said state-level Medicaid spending will increase by $76 billion between 2013 and 2022. This means dentists who serve these patients can expect significant growth in activity in the coming years.

Despite the availability of incentives from the federal government to modernize operations, many dental clinics and hygiene schools struggle to find the right system for adopting the use of electronic medical records. However, the right dental software can make this process much easier. It can even position individual practices to receive the maximum rewards from the Medicaid EHR Incentive Program.

Many dental institutions find it difficult to parse through the complex regulations and requirements surrounding the EHR Medicaid Incentive Program. Not only does implementing axiUm software allow dentists to become eligible for these rewards, the software also comes with consulting services that help streamline the compliance process. Advanced dental enterprise software can also equip dentists with the technology necessary to remain competitive in today's industry.
